Wally Winter's Retirement Party. June 2008

For Wally Winter's  Retirement, June 2008.
This uses 5 tunes – I sung It at his retirement party jl)

[Tune: Let me Call you Sweetheart]
Wally, Dear, We love you; you’re our friend so true--
All the years we’ve known you, you’re our hero too!
Now you’re moving onward, a new chapter will begin --
Before you book, let’s have a look at where you’ve been!

[Tune: Whiffenpoof Song]
He was once a dear lamb, on a college spree! Rah Rah Rah!
With that mischievous smile, got a Yale degree – Ah Ah Ah

And then he---

[Tune: Carry me back to Ol’ Virginny]

Carried himself to ol’ Virginny,
Learned about the UCC and statute of frauds --
But real life was calling our hero Wally,
And soon he was off to much greater things abroad –

And then he traveled to  --

[Tune: Brazil]

Brazil, where Peace Corps work had just begun,
And there beneath a tropic sun,
He brought in crops and just for fun, became, a first rate
teacher!

But his country called him home – and so –

[Tune: My Kind of Town]
In his kind of town, Chicago,
He put his roots down, in Chicago,
He stood by his legal post,
To help the folks who needed it most --
Cause ‘neath that carefree grin was lurking
A steel trap mind that never stopped working,
He did hard tasks without any whining,
And no court could deny his opining
‘Cause all his briefs were in limerick rhyming
In his kind of town!

But it wasn’t all work and no play for our Wally –
Just watch him on vacation!

[Tune: The Bear Went over the
Mountain]
Who’s up there upon that high mountain?
Why it’s Wally, in case you were doubtin’
Or the wildest rivers he’s scoutin’
In a tiny canoe!

No hardship seems ever to daunt him,
Dreams of five-star hotels never haunt him,
And when his photos he’s flauntin’ –
He says: Try it and you’ll like it too!

And, for the LAF Bike Ride Benefit: --
 [Tune: Bicycle Built for Two]
Wally, Wally is that you aboard a bike?
We thought you liked climbing or paddling,
Or maybe a rugged hike!
But now you are eating mileage,
While keeping your sense of stylage!
Though bruised and sore,
You’re back for more
As you pedal on down the pike!

But now his outdoor interests have merged with his activist
side, so

[Tune: Don’t Fence me in]
Give him clean brooks and streams filled with happy jumping
sturgeon--
He’ll keep them safe!
Give him great stands of oak where the forests are all virgin--
He’ll keep them safe!
Let him roam through the prairie swell and swale,
And watch the birds and flowers in every hill and dale,
The wildlands are our heritage, and Wally won’t fail –
He’ll keep them safe!

[Tune: Coney Island Baby]
So it’s --
So long dear Wally, we'll all miss you,
Here at LAF!
But it’s not goodbye when we kiss you,
‘Cause you’ll be coming back to see us,
And you'll tell us all about the
Great things at Prairie Crossing,
And everything that you’ve preserved!
So Wally, Wally, great times await you!
Great times that you deserve!
