JOHNS HOPKINS GRADUATION POEM -- 1989

                         Joan D. Levin 2114 South     4515 Willard Avenue                                          Chevy Chase, Maryland 20815

May 25, 1989

To Dr. Edyth Schoenrich, with thanks for helping me into a wonderful salmon-colored hood and a wonderful education!

Salmon stands for public health,

But every gal and fella,

Who earned a hood last night must think:

“Could this mean Salmonella?”

That same infectious dish that graced,

Our Epi One lab table,

Is brought to mind by salmon hood,

How else translate this label?

Somewhere the wag who dreamed this up,

Must chuckle at the pun.

And I do too!  It’s always best,

To end a job with fun!

So thank you for a super time,

I loved the convocation!

Keep hot things hot and cold things cold;

Lukewarm won’t heal a nation!

For Beth Damon's Birthday 2017

An Ode to Beth’s Birthday!
By Joan Levin, March 5, 2017

We watch as the decades roll by so fast,
How quickly the future turns into the past!
We’re taught that our days are numbered, but then,
We squander this treasure again and again!

Some fill up their days with meaningless strife,
While others add value each day of their life,
Beth is one of that fortunate few,
Who somehow – instinctively? – knows what to do!

Work, friends and family, personal care,
Beauty and grace, all of them there!
So even when birthdays add up to large digits,
It’s clear that our Beth neither fusses nor fidgets!

She goes right on living, days without end,
Mother and Grandma, and (I’m glad to say) friend!
Her counsel is wise, generosity ample,
She’s never a preacher, but leads by example!

So although this greeting is late to arrive,
Please treat it as though it were here on March Five!
Let’s celebrate now, give great cheers and then,
Next year we’ll do it all over again!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And this was for the lovely Sarong for her birthday luncheon!
Subject: Not another poem!!! This should have been included!
Sarong
A comely young birthday girl (who's counting years?)
Whose family and friends all greet her with cheers,
Says "I have lived large, and I have lived long,
And that is because I wear a sarong!"
Her children and grandchildren seek her advice,
On how to be happy and healthy and nice.
She answers "you must learn to tell right from the wrong,
And never forget to wear a sarong!"
What ever the dress codes, she still looks appealing,
Stylish and svelte, but not too revealing.
Skirts may be short, or calf-length, or long,
But she's always in style, wrapped in a sarong!
In conclusion I wish happy birthday to you,
And I hope this advice will bring happiness too:
Whatever you do, keep on singing this song,
"You can never go wrong if you wear a sarong!"
Carol Moseley Braun's Birthday, 2017
For Carol Moseley Braun's Birthday August 6, 2017
A Verse for Carol,
or Why August 16 should be a National Holiday!
You may be a Democrat and an agrarian,
Now add to that list, septuagenarian!
If shy about bragging you’ve reached that Big Seventy,
Just tell folks you’re going on Sixty-Eleventy!
For while you’re no longer a slip of a lass,
The World’s taken note: you’ve got plenty of class!
And though years hurry by, too swiftly to capture,
Through them all you have grown in wisdom and stature.
So look back in pride on the good you have done,
Then look forward to victories still to be won.
Most of all for your birthday, one more thing to say,
Have a splendidly joyful and cake-endowed day!
With much love and admiration,
Rob and Ariane in Arizona, 2015
In the winter of 2015 I had a great time with Ariane and Rob in their Arizona winter home!   It was a week of healthful meals, lots of hikes, workouts at Ariane's gym --  Wow did I come home in great shape!
Some opt for sunny ski-slopes
Or seek a Florida tan,
But nothing beats a healthful stay,
With Rob and Ariane!
The wraps and bright green smoothies,
Feed body and the soul,
And for good measure we spend time,
On some great worthwhile goal!
Ariane keeps me moving,
No time for lazy slouching,
Yoga, Weights and Body Pump,
And yet I’m still not grouching!
But most of all I treasure,
Your friendship tried and true,
So Ariane, and Rob, again,
My heartfelt thanks to you!
For Nancy deGrazia's birthday, 2012
(This was for Vic deGrazia's wife, the former Nancy Shlaes.  I'd given her a Kindle Gift certificate because the kids said she had just gotten a Kindle. )
Something neat and not too fancy
Erudite is right for Nancy!
This is not to jibe or heckle,
It’s just to say that she’s got sekhl*
She’s got the class, she’s got the looks,
And as we know, she’s got the books!
And that she has, an awful lot!
So what to get that she ain’t got?
Ah, cyber-living saves the day --
It looks like Kindle’s here to stay!
So pick and choose and when you’re done,
Add this to your Birthday fun!
*Wisdom, common sense.
Rawnika Songs 2011
I wrote these for Ariane & Rob's Hanukkah party in 2011.  Since we were raw foodies for this I called it Rawnika!  The tunes are all traditional.
HAPPY RAWNIKA!!!
Tune: Maoz Tzur
At this season long ago,
Miracles came thick and fast.
First the win o’er greater foe,
Oil for eight days was the last.
    But these days we’re dying,
    Using oil for frying!
    You’ll feel swell, you will kvell,
    Raw food prep applying!
Grate some carrots with a smile,
Add some yams and chia too.
Only takes a little while,
Full of life to nourish you!
Add your favorite seasoning,
Dry with gentle breezing!
You’ll feel swell, you will kvell,
Latkes are so pleasing!!
Cashews and some lemon juice
For a topping creamy,
Apples in a Cuisinart,
Make a sauce that’s dreamy!
Now you won’t be dying,
Using oil for frying!
You’ll feel swell, you will kvell!
Raw food is worth trying!
                              ________________
Tune: Dreydl, Dreydl, Dreydl
I made a little smoothie,
With mangos and with greens,
And living vibrant superfoods,
To keep my insides clean!
Oh blender blender blender –
Keep turning, sov sov sov!
Oh blender blender blender,
You make each day Yom Tov!
And now I’ll make another,
Cacao and carob too,
With coconuts and gojis,
And this one’s just for you!
Oh blender blender blender –
Keep turning, sov sov sov!
Oh blender blender blender,
You make each day Yom Tov!
               ______________
Tune: Oh Hanukkah
O  Rawnika, O Rawnika,
The Vitamix is stirring,
The Cuisinart is whirring,
Excalibur is purring!
The festive board is groaning,
With coconuts and kale,
Only tiny candles
Burn to tell the tale!
 And out in, the meadow –
The animals all dance for glee!
We’ve left them alive,
So they too will survive,
     Just like the brave Macabees!
We’ve left them alive,
So they too will survive,
    Just like the brave Macabees!
                         ______________
Tune: Mi Y Malel
When you are pining for brand new dining, With a new taste,
We think you need a big bowl of seaweed, You’ll feel fine!
Your life will rock a bit more with Maca,
In your smoothie,
Nuts are much better, when they are wetter,  Here, try mine!
Oy, you’ll feel better with a green food tonic!  If  that won’t work, then go for a colonic!
Or try Rejuvelac,  or fresh wheat grass!
You’ll feel fine,   And you can bet your –--
ASK me a question, you’ll get an answer, Where’s the protein?
Have some more green-os,
It’s got aminos, all you need!
Collards and kale too, never will fail you,
Eat some daily,
These foods are super, never a blooper –-
Now let’s feed!
For Marilyn Bergstrom's Birthday 2011
January 26, 2011
For Marilyn:
For a salad or side,
It can’t be denied,
Swedish is best!
It beats all the rest!
Although it’s not raw,
It won’t stick in your craw,
Add bits to a salad.
Here I’ll end my ballad!
Happy Birthday!!!
Wally Winter's Retirement Party. June 2008
For Wally Winter's  Retirement, June 2008.
This uses 5 tunes – I sung It at his retirement party jl)
[Tune: Let me Call you Sweetheart]
Wally, Dear, We love you; you’re our friend so true--
All the years we’ve known you, you’re our hero too!
Now you’re moving onward, a new chapter will begin --
Before you book, let’s have a look at where you’ve been!
[Tune: Whiffenpoof Song]
He was once a dear lamb, on a college spree! Rah Rah Rah!
With that mischievous smile, got a Yale degree – Ah Ah Ah
And then he---
 [Tune: Carry me back to Ol’ Virginny]
Carried himself to ol’ Virginny,
Learned about the UCC and statute of frauds --
But real life was calling our hero Wally,
And soon he was off to much greater things abroad –
And then he traveled to  --
[Tune: Brazil]
Brazil, where Peace Corps work had just begun,
And there beneath a tropic sun,
He brought in crops and just for fun, became, a first rate
teacher!
But his country called him home – and so –
[Tune: My Kind of Town]
In his kind of town, Chicago,
He put his roots down, in Chicago,
He stood by his legal post,
To help the folks who needed it most --
Cause ‘neath that carefree grin was lurking
A steel trap mind that never stopped working,
He did hard tasks without any whining,
And no court could deny his opining
‘Cause all his briefs were in limerick rhyming
In his kind of town!
But it wasn’t all work and no play for our Wally –
Just watch him on vacation!
[Tune: The Bear Went over the
Mountain]
Who’s up there upon that high mountain?
Why it’s Wally, in case you were doubtin’
Or the wildest rivers he’s scoutin’
In a tiny canoe!
No hardship seems ever to daunt him,
Dreams of five-star hotels never haunt him,
And when his photos he’s flauntin’ –
He says: Try it and you’ll like it too!
And, for the LAF Bike Ride Benefit: --
 [Tune: Bicycle Built for Two]
Wally, Wally is that you aboard a bike?
We thought you liked climbing or paddling,
Or maybe a rugged hike!
But now you are eating mileage,
While keeping your sense of stylage!
Though bruised and sore,
You’re back for more
As you pedal on down the pike!
But now his outdoor interests have merged with his activist
side, so
[Tune: Don’t Fence me in]
Give him clean brooks and streams filled with happy jumping
sturgeon--
He’ll keep them safe!
Give him great stands of oak where the forests are all virgin--
He’ll keep them safe!
Let him roam through the prairie swell and swale,
And watch the birds and flowers in every hill and dale,
The wildlands are our heritage, and Wally won’t fail –
He’ll keep them safe!
[Tune: Coney Island Baby]
So it’s --
So long dear Wally, we'll all miss you,
Here at LAF!
But it’s not goodbye when we kiss you,
‘Cause you’ll be coming back to see us,
And you'll tell us all about the
Great things at Prairie Crossing,
And everything that you’ve preserved!
So Wally, Wally, great times await you!
Great times that you deserve!
For Sheldon Roodman's Farewell Party, 2007
Shel Roodman was our Director at Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago in the '70s.
A really good guy and while he was not without his controversies, I appreciated what he did for this organization.    I worked at LAF from 1973 through 1995 when we moved to Washington, D.C., I couldn't miss this occasion and sang this at the big farewell party.
There are several tunes in it, but the are all well known.
Jim Trainor was the head of Illinois Department of Public Aid, an agency that was a frequent defendant in our actions, the union references refer to the efforts of some LAF lawyers to unionize, and Reagan and Gingrich were among the Republicans who were making life a lot harder for our clients.
For Sheldon Roodman, June 8, 2007
[Tune: Oh Susannah]
Oh, he took the helm of LAF in 1977,
And he thought his home on Dearborn Street,
Was just one step from Heaven.
The clients smiled, while lawyers filed
Their motions and their briefs.
And he never once imagined that there could be any beefs!
      But now he’s older, wiser, he’s learned a thing or two –
     So just for fun, I’d like to run, some history by you!
Well he took on Mr. Trainor, and all of Public Aid,
Then he fixed his sights on landlords, who did not make the grade.
Fa-mi-lies and children came to know his helping hand,
As did prisoners and workers, and new folks in this land.
      But Reagan, and Gingrich, and others went “chop-chop”
     And there were other problems too that never seemed to            stop!
[Segue to "Union Label" ]
Because – they soon wore, the union label,
When they were trying a federal case.
There’s no disguising, that organizing,
Could wipe the smile off, the most benign director’s face –
But somehow, we all lived through it,
And now by golly, we all get along!
And just remember, if you are able,
The union still has the very best of songs!
Spoken: But all the while, in some evil quarters –
some mean people were saying:
["Give me Some Men"]
Give us restrictions, some iron-clad restrictions,
To pin LAF to the wall!
Lobbying must go, and some people we know,
Should not have legal counsel at all!
Oh, scuttle class actions, we want satisfaction,
That only the status quo brings,
Who’s this Sheldon Roodman guy?
We’re going to clip his wings!
Who’s this Sheldon Roodman guy?
We’re going to clip his wings!
[Spoken]: But Shel Roodman wasn’t stopped!
And he led us on and on, higher and higher,
Always dreaming of the day,
When we would reach the very summit,
Where nine ladies and gentlemen,
Nicely dressed in basic black,
Would tell those evil people ...
[Stop in the Name of Love]
Stop, in the name of Law!
Before you break his heart!
Think it over!
[Spoken]  And so, in summation, I would respectfully submit,
and may it please the crowd, that ---
[Battle Hymn of the Republic]
All the headaches and restrictions
And a budget much too small,
Didn’t stop him for one moment,
Sheldon still kept standing tall!
So let’s drink to him today,
And raise our glasses one and all –
Thank you Shel for all you’ve done!
[motion everyone to join in on "we thank you"]
For your thirty years, we thank you!
For your diligence, we thank you!
For your leadership, we thank you!
Now get out and have some fun!
Happy Golden Anniversary Alice and Don!
For Alice and Don Goldsmith's 50th Anniversary June 28, 2006
I printed this with a picture of me age 5 in a cowgirl getup!
Tune:  Home on the Range
Now Home on the Range may sound a bit strange,
But I'm a cowgirl from the start,
So this is my song, as I gallop along,
And it says what is close to my heart:
     Mazel Tov Alice and Don!
     May the strength of your love bring you cheer!
     You're a sight to behold, and may this day of gold,
     Bring you happiness year after year!
Now Alice my cuz is the best ever was,
And so is her Donald as well,
They' the awesomest pair; best you'll find anywhere,
And their love holds us all in its spell!
     Mazel Tov Alie and Don!
     May the strength of your love bring you cheer!
     You'r a sight to behold, and may this day of gold,
     Bring you happiness year after year!
With every good wish and much love,
For the Ladies of the University of Chicago Law School Class of 1972
In  May, 2002,  I had a party at my house for the women in the University Law School Class of 1972 who had come in for our 30th Reunion.  This references some famous cases we read in our first year.
To the fabulous women of the
University of Chicago
Law School Class of 1972
On the Occasion of our 30th Reunion!
May 5, 2002
Sumer’s a-cumin in, dearhearts,
With Sunshine as well as with Shade,
And everyone surely will thirst for,
Glasses of Cold Lemonade!
Beyond reasonable doubt I am certain,
That Baxendale told Hadley, “I confess,
Had you plied me with Cold Lemonade,
I’d have sent you that shaft by express!”
And then there was poor Mrs. Palsgraf,
She would have been fine had she stayed,
Safe inside that railroad station,
Drinking glasses of Cold Lemonade!
Last consider please, Dudley and Stevens,
And the fate of that young cabin boy,
Too bad that those sailors did not have,
Cold Lemonade to enjoy!
So make Lemonade every summer,
Drink plenty, because you just saw,
How Cold Lemonade in abundance,
Could have altered the course of the law!
With best wishes,
Pantoums with Mark Strand and More
Pantoums with Mark Strand
pantoum
 noun
Definition of pantoum:
Dear Joan, that pantoum fragment was terrific. Yours actually rhymes,
making the job more difficult. I've been either on the road or teaching.
I can't wait for this to be over--this teaching. Although I do love
teaching Kafka. Nice evening the other daY, the Moroccan food, etc.
Best, Mark
At 04:45 PM 3/29/00 -0600, you wrote:
  Judy, Mike, Mark -- It was good to see you all last night! This
morning in my Basic Program class (which I hope will improve my mind
although this hasn't happened yet) our instructor passed around "Eating
Poetry." We had a lively discussion which wandered into the outfield
with talk (because one classmate is a librarian) about public
perceptions of librarians versus books, reading & poetry. I always liked
Eating Poetry and thank you Mark for writing it!
It occurred to me then that I hadn't explained pantoums very well (at least as I understand them, which may have no resemblance to what they really are) -- but
here's my concept about how they go and what came to mind during class this morning:
  Drinking Moroccan Wine -- 3/28/00
  Please pass that good red wine;
  We're dining au Moroc,
  And suppertime is fine,
  With friends from Antioch.
  We're dining au Moroc,
  With olives, bread and chatter.
  With friends from Antioch,
  The goblets hardly matter.
  With olives, bread and chatter,
  We sip the ruby red.
  The goblets hardly matter?
  The Prophet shakes his head!
  We sip the ruby red,
  The river straight to Hell?
  The Prophet shakes his head;
  We say: This drink is swell!
  The river straight to Hell?
  Please pass that good red wine!
  We say: This drink is swell --
  And suppertime is fine!
  That's all, Folks! Joan
                   ******
Here is another  Pantoum!  I wrote it for Andrea Monsees around 1996 - we had been talking about Pantoums and she gave me a poetry encyclopedia for Hanukkah in which "Pantoum" was one of the entries.
